Once again, the lashing rain gave way to pale sunshine at Wimbledon Park for the last Club Open meeting of the summer season, the 5000m Festival, held for the first time on a Saturday, with the now traditional accompaniments of beer, barbecue and music.

As the crazy, crowded catch-up track and field season continues, the last few weeks have seen some fabulous racing and results at the Club’s Open distance meetings and the various Championships. At the Surrey County Championships in Kingston, held late in the season due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Club's athletes won a total of 34 medals.

in a matter of weeks this summer young Ellen Weir soared to the top of the All-time HW Women's rankings for 3000m (9:36.40) and 5000m (16:34.29), and will be competing for GB in the Women's A Final of the 5000m at the European U20 Championships in Tallinn, Estonia today, 18 July.
A single HW vest at the British Championships is enough to make us all proud, but the sight of five Club athletes lining up in almost consecutive events last Friday evening was truly memorable.

Following a few weeks in which HW athletes have been busily achieving qualifiying standards and winning medals at a clutch of Championships, a fabulous tally of five HW athletes will be competing in the Muller British Championships in Manchester over the weekend of 25-27 June: Charlie Eastaugh in the 1500m, Dwayne Cowan in the 400m, Rechmial and Chad Miller in the 100m, and Ellen Weir in the 3000m trials for the U20 European Championships.

In the blistering heat of last weekend a handful of HW athletes won medals at the South of England U20 and Senior Championships in Bedford, notably gold in the 5000m for Fred Slemeck who kicked from 700m out, to win in 15:03.26. Second-claim Sam Todd finished ninth.

New York-based Ben Toomer set a half marathon PB of 66:35 in Greenville, South Carolina on 27 February (pictured below), a time which saw him top the UK Rankings for 2021 for six whole days until Mo Farah spoiled the party by clocking 63.06 in Djibouti!

Last Saturday should have seen the HW Senior Men's team defend their South of England Cross Country Relay title only a week after jostling with 200-odd athletes on the start line at the first fixture of the Surrey Cross Country League, all revved up for the fight to win back the League Trophy from Kent AC. Not quite as we know it, of course, thanks to the new norm of Covid-19-guidelines, but what a joy for all concerned to take part in some proper competition after months of race starvation. And not just one event but two distance meetings and a sprint competition in the space of a week.
