Medals Galore

As the crazy, crowded catch-up track and field season continues, the last few weeks have seen some fabulous racing and results at the Club’s Open distance meetings and the various Championships. At the Surrey County Championships in Kingston, held late in the season due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Club's athletes won a total of 34 medals.

There was a gold haul for three of the most recent youngsters to join the Club, having previously shone in schools competitions. U13 Elliott Turbin was top of the tree with a trio of gold medals in the 100m, 200m and high jump; while U15 Conor Kelly won gold in the 200m and high jump.

Since joining HW in the summer, the two boys, coached by Paul Miller over the sprints, and Trevor Whittle in the high jump, have been notching up great times and leaps, so much so that Elliott is ranked second in the UK over 200m and in the high jump, while Conor is ranked seventh for his age group in the high jump.

There was gold, too, for another new member, U15 George Johnson, competing as a club athlete for the first time, having won the bronze medal at the English Schools Championships at Sportcity in Manchester in July.

More Medals in Manchester

A week after pocketing the gold medal in the high jump at the Surrey County Championships, U15 Mabel-Rose Scales won a silver medal at the England U15/U17 Championships at Sportcity Manchester, with a jump of 1.56; while U15 George Johnson also added to his County gold on his return to the venue where he won his English Schools Championships bronze earlier in the summer. This time he clinched another bronze with a throw of 47.37. It was enough for George, who only began competing in June, to rise to sixth on the UK ranking list for the javelin.

U17 Freddie Arkell, who has had a busy championships season, clocked a PB of 10.94 in the 100m, and 22.09 in the 200m, but frustratingly finished fourth in both finals, just outside the medals.
