The Club's teams were in action last Saturday in the first match of the Surrey Cross Country League season. The senior men launched the defence of their title in drizzly conditions over a new course at Effingham Common, and with many of last season's top scorers unavailable finished second to last year's runners-up, Kent AC.

Road-Worthy!

The Senior Men’s A team equalled their best ever performance in the English National 6-Stage Road Relay Championships at Birmingham’s Sutton Park on Sunday, finishing in 13th – the same position as last year – and top South London and Surrey team. In remarkable symmetry, the B team finished in 45th, again the identical position to last year.

HW's Senior Men’s teams put in some sterling performances at the South of England Six-stage Road Relay Championships at Crystal Palace on Sunday, nailing the double-goal of qualifying two teams for the National Championships at Sutton Park on October 5th, with a top six finish for the A team.

Warming up for the Southern Road Relay Championships next weekend, the Senior Men’s team took the silver medals in the Surrey County Road Relay Championships, while the M40 team bagged gold. And there were bronze medals for the M50 Men.

Gold Galore

Two of the Club’s international sprinters, Theo Etienne and Chad Miller, helped HW take gold in the Senior Men’s 4x100m Relay Championship at Carshalton, teaming up with Ryan Facey and Antonio Douglas (pictured above) to win in 42.22, a new HW Club record.

Teenager Freddie Arkell gave himself an early birthday present when he stormed to victory in the U15B 200m at the England Athletics U15/U17 Championships at Bedford on Sunday, September 1, adding the outdoor title to the indoor one he achieved over the same distance in Sheffield in February.

HW's Theo Etienne made a welcome return to competitive form when he reached the final of the 100m at the British Championships in Birmingham last weekend: a race loaded with stars from Adam Gemili and Chijindu Ujah, to Zharnel Hughes and the ultimate winner, Ojie Edoburun.

European Bronze for Chad

Teenager Chad Miller took the bronze medal in the European Junior Championships in Boras, Sweden (July 18-21) in 10.53, having won his heat in 10.67 and semi final in 10.47 just outside his season's best of 10.43 set at the end of June at the Bauhaus Junior Gala Invitation in Mannheim, Germany.

Grand Finale

HW are aiming for a clean sweep of titles in the next few days, beginning with the final match in the Southern Athletics League today (Saturday 17th August) at Tooting Bec in which a win will guarantee the Division title and promotion to Division 2 in 2020.

Guildford Glory

Masters of Surrey

HW Masters athletes were in the medals at the Surrey and Sussex County Championships at Kingston on June 2. Lisa Thomas (above left) won gold in the W50 400m and 300m hurdles, and bronze in the W35 800m. Emilie Bokor Ingram claimed a complete set, winning the W35 400m and taking silver in the 200m and bronze in the 100m.

Vitality Statistics

A large  contingent of HW athletes were in action over the bank holiday weekend competing in the Vitality London road races. Ross Franks was just pipped into second place in a tight finish in his Westminster Mile race on Sunday. 'It was my first experience of the race and I absolutely loved it!

HW are currently top of the Southern Athletics League (Division 3 South East) after winning the first two matches: so the quest for promotion is on target! The next match at Guildford on Saturday, June 15, will be crucial, as it includes Cambridge Harriers who have equal league points, but are lying second in the table by virtue of scoring less points than HW over the first two matches. Never has it been so true that every point counts!
