Surrey Championships Part One

This year the Surrey Championships has become an event of two halves, with many of the middle distance events being moved to 6 July, where they will be incorporated in the timetable for the Masters Championships. The Surrey County committee needed to dramatically shorten the existing timetable, which risked running over the eight hour limit for athletics meetings imposed by UKA.

After much deliberation it was decided that the 3000m for U15 Boys, U15 Girls, U17 Men and U20 Men; the 1500m for U17 Women, U17 Men and U20 Men; and the 5000m for Senior Men would now be run in July.

At the May Championships over the weekend of 11/12 May, there were gold medals for U15 Oliver Cartwright in the triple jump, and George Johnson (left) in the javelin. As an U17 George finished last season ranked 5th in the UK, and already in his first year as an U20 he is ranked eighth with a PB of 55.99m.

Last summer he represented England at the Schools International Athletics Board Championships at Grangemouth and trains with an elite javelin group at Windsor, Slough, Eton and Hounslow AC (WSEH), with whom he travelled to Tenerife in April for warm-weather training (below right). 'It was a really good experience', says George, 'we covered lots of different types of training sessions to develop the skills you need for javelin, including shot for explosive power, sprints, hurdles, plyometrics, gymnastics, gym work, medball, and stretching on the beach!'
