Quick Silver
Freddie Arkell, the England Indoor and Outdoor U15 Champion over 200m in 2019, took the silver medal for the 60 metres in his first major event as an U17 in the Surrey Indoor Championships at the David Weir Leisure Centre in Carshalton last weekend in a warm-up for this weekend's National Indoor Championships in Sheffield, where he goes in the U17 60m and 200m. Efe Peters will also be competing in the U17M 60m, and Missy Cooper in the U17W 60m.
Having won his semi-final in 7.08, Freddie was slightly outside that time in the final, finishing in 7.09, just one-hundredth of a second behind the winner.
Mabel-Rose Scales, who, like Freddie, has just moved up an age group, also just missed out on a gold medal, in the U15 Girls high jump. She shared the winning height of 1.50m, but had to settle for the silver on count-back. Mabel-Rose is also competing in Sheffield this weekend.
Younger sister Willow leapt a personal best of 3.99m in the long jump to take silver in her first U13 competition. She added six centimetres to her previous best set outdoors at the same venue last August.
There was a silver medal too for Antonio Douglas in the Senior Men’s 60m. He was joint fastest of the five qualifiers in the heats, winning his race in a PB of 7.07 but had to settle for second place in the final, despite clocking a new PB of 7.06.
Devonte Casely-Hayford twice improved on his previous best of 7.31 as he finished third in his heat in 7.27 and then fifth in the final in 7.20.
Multi-eventer Mark Andrews, limited by injury, competed only in the shot, where he also won silver.
Kyra Stone took the bronze medal in the U15G long jump with a PB of 4.74. Cora Barnett was sixth in the same event with 4.53, also a PB, and there were PBs, too, for Romane McFarlane, who cleared 1.55m to finish fifth in the U15 Boys high jump, and young multi-eventer Darcey O’Shea, who was sixth in the long jump in her first year as an U17, with 4.56m, which added eight centimetres to her previous best set in January.
