Silver Lining in the Clouds

The Club's youngsters had to battle through gale force gusts and torrential rain in the Bruce Judd Surrey Young Athletes Cross Country Relays at Stoke Park, Guildford last Saturday. Even though they had the worst conditions of the day, the Girls U15 trio were rewarded with a set of silver medals. First leg runner Millie Thorpe covered the muddy, slippery 2.3km circuit in 8:35, handing over in fourth place to Georgia Winter, who posted an identical time, moving up into second place, which was consolidated by Lulu Weisz, who brought the team home in 25:29, clocking 8:19, the second fastest leg of the day.

In the second of the U15G teams Millie Doyle (8:41), Eloise Davies (9:01) and Lauren Armitage (9:22) combined to finish seventh in 27:04; while Bailey O’Leary (9:27), Cliona O’Brien (9:33) and Charlotte Lam (9:39) were ninth in 28:39.

The U17 Women's team had been favourites for a medal, however Rebekah Riches unfortunately had to pull out with tonsillitis. Nevertheless, running as a non-scoring duo, Georgie Clarke posted the second fastest time of the day, clocking 8:12, while Selma Hegvold was third fastest on the second leg in 9:30.

First leg runner Sophie Thorpe was the quickest member of the U13G team which finished ninth. She clocked 9:28 with twin sisters Sophie and Charlotte Conway (9:33 and 9:39 respectively) completing the team.

In the U13 Boys event the A team of Oliver Holden (8:53) Jack Hobden (9:10) and Matt Weisz (9:00)  finished 13th in 27:03. In the B team which finished 15th, Ibrahim Mohamed Achchi, on his debut for the Club, was the fastest of all seven U13 boys in action for the Club. He clocked 8:42 on the second leg, taking over from Sam Vowles (9:19) in 18th position and moving up into 14th place before handing over to Hugo Kelly, also competing for the Club for the first time, who brought the team home in 10:12. Alfie Hunter, who was left isolated after Ollie Winter had to withdraw through injury, made up a non-scoring team with runners from Aldershot, Farnham and District AC and Windsor, Slough, Eton & Hounslow AC, which finished in 28:39. He ran the first leg in 9:46.

In the U15 Boys event first leg runner William Belton (8:15) Joseph Willis (8:48) and Adam Hammadi (8:23) finished 12th in 25:26.

Morgan Rennie was the only Club runner in the U17 Men's event. He teamed up with Marlowe Ellis of Kingston to form a non scoring team, and clocked 8:27 on the second leg, having taken over in 16th.

In her debut in the Frankfurt Marathon last Sunday Claire Grima finished third W40 in 2:45:22, despite being well outside her PB set in this year's London Marathon. Husband Dave (pictured below with Claire) was 31st M40 in 2:42:53, also outside his PB set in the same race. Robbie Hynes, running his first marathon of the year, clocked 2:54:58. He too was well outside his best time.

Mini Multi-eventers

On Sunday 6th October 90 children from the thriving Sunday morning 7Upsandovers group braved the autumnal weather (the rain managed to stay away for a few hours) to participate in the annual 'Mini-Olympics' at Wimbledon Park. A whole host of PB's were set and great fun was had by all.
